Default Classic bonnet vents - they do what exactly..?

Every now and then, and for no apparent reason, a question pops into my head and if I can't find the answer then I have to ask.

What is the purpose of Classic bonnet vents if you assume the car is in standard form..?

My own educated guess was that they let air pressure escape -- the result of having air rammed into the bay via the scoop and frontage. Air getting out means more can get in. Small amounts of heat doing a runner might be another plus perhaps.

If this is correct though, what happens if someone fits a baby-scoop to replace either or both the vents..? And the air being fed in via such scoops... why and where does it get directed to..?

Maybe all irrelevant in the real world but just interested to know.

Jonts.
