Default knock sensor

Can any one tell my where my knock sensor is and how I can tell if its playing up as I thought my ecu should retard the timing when it detects detting

The knock sensor is on the top of the block down under the intercooler, if you look where the gear box joins the engine it's just in front of that, All I can say is it's a b4stard to change, had to replace mine the other day.
If you look at the engine towards the top right hand side, You'll find a wire and a connector that disapears down under the intercooler.

As for playing up, I've no idea, my check engine light came on indicating it was a knocksensor so I changed it.

£56 +Vat from my local dealer

Cool

Just changed mine on a 1995 WRX Jap wagon,

Dont worry its easy, remove intercooler ( slacken jubilee clips & wiggle it out )
Looking from front of car lean over with a small torch & look between the 2 right hand "legs" of the inlet manifold, you will see a 12mm ( maybe 13mm ?) bolt head with a small black or dirty cotton real sized lump of plastic under it.
This is the standard knock sensor, most of the pictures I've seen on the net of knock sensors are in a slightly different place ( further towards the back of engine ) which may be where aftermarket one are placed, who knows but thats where mine was

Disconect electrical connector which was under intercooler & in middle of engine, undo bolt with socket set I managed easily with a 1/2" drive so anything smaller will be fine. The bolt is not tight ( 16 ft/lbs I think ) but is glued in ( locktite ) so requires a bit more to remove, do not overtighten when reinstalling cause you smash the sensor & have to start again !!

I take it you must have a code 22 from your ECU tellin you theres a problem ?

Take a look on here, you want the section about fitting a Knocklink.
