look at the brake fluid res left hand side of engine bay with bonnet up..... plastic container with fluid in,there should be two in built lines on the side of the container, minimum and maximum....... check fluid level is in between.... if lower than the min mark get some dot 4 spec brake fluid and top up

if level is low id also check you brake pads.... as your brakes wear the fluid level drops,so might be because your pads are very worn...... if thats the case, dont top up the fluid,as when the pistons in the calipers are pushed back to allow new pads to be fitted, the fluid level will rise and might overflow everywhere if too much...... if your not happy messing with your braking system id deff pay someone to do it for you..... its got to be right.

is that a difficult job to fix if it turns out to be the switch?

If you have just had new discs and pads fitted then the brake lines would have been bled after they were fitted. This has reduced the amount of fluid in the resivoir and this is why your handbrake light is coming on.

Another way to test this is if it goes out under heavy braking then comes back on, this happens becuase it covers the sensor when lurching forward then uncovers it again when you are off the brakes.

Just top it up and you will be fine!

Have check the brake fluid, it is just over a quarter of an inche under the full mark?

would this cause the handbrake light to stay on?

if its above the min mark then the light should not illuminate all the time..... you need to check the handbrake system out now, access the handbrake switch and remove the wiring to it,if light goes off then the switch is nackered,if it stays on then you might have the wire down to earth at some point

Just had the same problem after messing around with the brakes. Luckily I hadn't dumped the brake fluid I'd bled off, so I just stuck it back in again at the top. Saved me crawling about under the back of the car in the pouring rain with an MOT due this week!
