speedo- ecu problem?
Hi peeps,
My speedo packed up a few weeks ago on my95 wrx. I don't use the car very often. Will the speedo not working affect the ecu and running of the car as when I've took her out if I accelerate hard she suddenly stops as if I had hit a brick wall. The cel comes on and I limp home. Have done a black-black check and the speed sensor shows as a fault. It's fitted with a turbo back de cat exhaust. Would the duff speedo affect the car this way. Thanks.

I would check your speedo cable before you start looking for a new speedo clock. If the cable has broken or come loose then the speedo clock will stop working. The ecu will go into limp mode.
2 part cable: 1 end about 2" long that starts from the gearbox end & plugs into the convertor. Then there should be a small black box, convertor kph to mph in the middle. Then a longer cable thats plugs into the convertor then goes to the back of the speedo clock.
If you can manage to check if the speedo cable is plugged into the back of the speedo clock & its ok. The remove the end of the cable that plugs into the convertor, connect a electrical drill to the cable spindle & get an assistant to watch the speedo while you run the drill. If that works then unplug the convertor from the smaller cable & repeat the drill test. You should be able to check the operation of each part of the cable & convertor, separated & connected together. Make sure you dont lose the little clips they hlep to keep the cable in place.
