Detting problem
Hi all
Can any one help i have a 93/94 wrx import i have had it 18 months or so i had problems with the engine and was advised that it would be cheaper to change the engine than to have it fixed so I had a brand new 2.5 short engine fitted along with this I have fitted a
Blitz boost controller
Ninja exhaust from down pipe back not the down pipe its self
Walbro 255 fuel pump
Induction kit
Stage 1 clutch
But since I have had the engine fitted when I get to about 3500 to 4000 revs @ .8 to .9 bar of boost it dets like crazy where as before I could get to about 1.5 bar and still no detting noise plus when it dose it I get some black smoke from the exhaust not blue or grey just black
It’s driving me crazy having a 2.5 and not being able to get the full benefit from it
Any ideas to what I can do to sort it

from memory, a 93/94 ecu can be remapped so can't see a problem with it going ona 2.5 block, unless its not got enough adjustment for it (bit over my head), but was it mapped when built?
have you been running octain booster in it at all? if not try it see what you get.

Get it mapped, quickly! Your fuel and ignition timing are going to be way out on the standard ecu. Its either £2000 for another engine, or £800 for an after-market ecu, such as the Apexi power fc.

standard ecu will not cope with a big change in capacity (25% increase !!) , also this ecu cannot be remapped, you could get a scoobyecu type ecu but whether or not that will cope with the 2.5 is unknown. Maybe speak with scoobyclinic about their scoobyecu. The best alternative is a powerfc fitted and mapped.

iv tryed octain boost it makes no difference but one thing i have noticed is that it dosent do it all the time just most of the time
i carnt realy aford a new ecu the engine took all my spair cash is their some kined of chip i could put in the ecu or possibly get the standard ecu tweeked in any way untill cash comes along

try scoobyclinic, they do a chip to replace yours which is customer mapped

As I said though, I dont know if they can do this to work with a 2.5 ltr.
The det is not going to be an issue with the fuel, merely the quantity injected. Dont forget 25% larger capacity means greater volume of air which needs the same rise in proportion of fuel to get a good proper burn. You will probably be running dangerously lean at the moment.

Well whoever suggested that you fit a 2.5 without a remap, needs shooting!
Looks like you have 3 choices:
1) Buy an Apexi ecu all in for £800
2) Don't drive the car until you can afford to buy the ecu.
3) Drive the car as is and hope that you don't have to spend £2000+ on another engine in the very near future!
I suppose you could always go back to whoever fitted the 2.5 and ask them to contribute to the new ecu. Ask them how they expected the standard ecu to cope with 25% increase in capacity.
How much warrenty did you get with the engine?
