Either your low on fluid, low on pad material or the floats stuck.
It is common for the float to get stuck, just take the lid off the resovoir and give the float a poke, that tends to cure it.

gotmashed, i've been investigating today! it seems its and earth fault or some kind of fault elsewhere, as i checked the float switch all ok, cleaned the earth connection on where the handbrake bolts to the body and then i noticed that when i let the handbrake off without the engine running, the light dims but doesn't go out, however with the engine running the light goes out and all is ok, this tells me that either something is backfeeding thru earth and causing the light to stay dim, or an electrical component has broken down, possibly the diode pack on the alternator or something alarm/immobilisor related, i've given for a bit as my car has got so many electrical additions, ie alarms, balackjax, gauges, turbotimer, defi controller etc etc and its a total wiring nightmare could be anywhere!!! might be a job for the local auto electrics garage as i'm not sure if i can be bothered, be handy if anyone knows of any common problems???
The little float in the brake fluid gets stuck, im a n00b, it happened to me and it was the first thing I looked for! Just wait till the engine is cool and stick your pinky in there and just give i a little whip it'll become unstuck and your light will go off
If it don't work go to a reputable garage
