MY96 JDM WRX Engine Swap Advice
Hey folks,
I'm looking at swapping my standard wrx engine, due to high milage and a few problems (oil pump, bearings). I was wondering what options I had, doing it myself, so something fairly straight forward and cost effective.
Easiest thing would be another 96 wrx engine, but was thinking about an sti engine or a later version wrx, but not sure if these will go in without any problems. Im quite handy in the garage, but don't want to make life difficult/expensive for myself.
Its a v-ltd (if that makes any difference) running a Z4 ecu.
Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated
Cheers.

dont think it would be that hard tbh. Just strip your old engine for the heads etc, transfer to new short engine and drop in. New oil pump, maybe water pump as well. You would also need a mappable ecu though to take advantage.

with a drop out/in jobbie, you have to be careful of the phases. there is phase 1, phase 1.5 and phase 2. I think yours is a phase 1.5 (may be worng on that as I dont know the years of the different phases) so you would need a car from either a phase 1.5 or a phase 1. This will then just drop in and all the connectors etc will match up. I think with a phase 2, you have to mess about with wiring etc.

Didn't relise that, how can you tell what phase the cars is, vin number? If its relatively straight forward wiring, then thats ok, just not super complicated stuff, unless i've got good instructions. Would the Z4 ecu still work?
I'm assuming an upgrade to a sti engine of same year or a later version engine would require more wiring modification and different ecu?

if your on the same phase engine, then the ecu would still work as your not physically chaning the wiring loom so the ecu side of things would be okay. if you go for a similar phase sti engine, then to take advantage of the extra power available of that engine then you would need to swap the ecu for an sti one which will have a higher rev limit and more aggressive timing.
