Question MY98 Sport Speedo problem

Driving down to the shops yesterday my Check Engine light came on for a few seconds, and the speedo started playing up.
The CEL turned off when I revved the engine a little, but the speedo is all over the place now - under-reading by a lot when it shows anything at all.
I think the 2 are related, as I've seen people talking in other threads about the cable / gearbox sender breaking, but I get the impression they're all talking about the old spinning-cable type of speedo cable. I had a look at the back of my dials and the one on my Sport (1998 - facelift dashboard) looks electrical?

Anyone got any experience of this?
Whereabouts is the gearbox sender?

Hiya Mike,
Just wondering what the speedo fault with your car was in the end as I have the same problem, Check engine light on, limp home mode (wont rev over 4500 revs), speedo needle jumps all over the place especially if I put my foot down. I have asked a few people with similar faults and they all say its either sensor, convertor or speedo itself, the sensors £100 alone so I dont really want to be guessing at what it is and getting it wrong so was just hoping you might be able to shed some light.
Thank you
Danny

On mine it was the speed sensor. Mine's got the facelifted dashboard, so it's the electronic type on my car. Changing the sensor cured it.
