As the owner of a new japan spec wrx sti, I am very impressed with it's awesome power. What is not too impressive about the car is it's
performance while in slow moving traffic. Whe I pull out of a cue to overtake I basically have to wait until the engine gets up to about 5600 rpm to really get the power I want, is there a simple reliable way to get the pwer band to come in a at lower revs?

I don't know if it works as in the normal Euro spec Impreza, but worth a look at exhaust manifolds and downpipes.

Hi There redline,
i have the new Sti and find totally the opposite to yourself, boost comes in quite early, and i dont have to push it to get her to go!!. Everytime i touch the big loud pedal she wants to take off!!.

Its defo flat up till around 3300rpm, after that she pulls like a train and iam Still taking it easy as next to no mileage on mine yet.

What fuel are you using??........ Have you tried using Optimax?

Jonno

3300 doesn't sound that bad, you've got to bear in mind that it's running a slightly bigger turbo than the euro rexes....which causes more lag.

Hi, thanks for all the replies. Jonno, I wish I could say the same as you. My new sti only goes wild from about 5000rpm, below that it's quick but not what you expect from 300hp.
I have been thinking along the lines of a intake an exhaust system, possibly boost controller. Are there any drawbacks to using a boost controller?
About the fuel, we don't have much of a choice. I use unleaded Texaco.

redline.

Secret Agent Man,

What's the best way to minimise lag?

Redline!!!!!
You can only run your sti on SUPER unleaded, higher octane the better as unleaded will damage your engine
Try optimax and/or super with octane booster.
Unleaded is bad
Probably why you have no power....

What sort of fuel octane rating is ideal? I will have to get a can of ovtane booster and give it a shot. Why is regular unleaded so bab for the engine? Unfortunately the users manual came in Japanese, so I had no way of finding out what fuel is ideal.

You guys have a great forum here, thanks again.

Cool

Hiya Redline,
you need atleast 97ron fuel, jap imports have their ignition timing set for 100ron fuel, if you run 95 ron fuel it does 2 things, it reduces your power as it doesnt burn as good secondly is it will cause det in your engine and totally knacker your pistons up, this will eventually cause total engine failure, ie new engine as it will go pop
Super unleaded only (or optimax as its 98.6ron rather than 97) and if you check out places like www.scoobymania.co.uk you can also get octane booster to increase the levels up to nearer 100ron fuel, will make your car run smoother and without det in the engine

I don't know if they still put this in the book or not, but it used to warn that use of anything but hi-octane (that's what the good juice is called here) will damage the engine.

You can use normal UL in emergencies, but it is certainly not a good idea to do that for long, and definitely don't hammer the thing when running on that stuff!

NB: some will say we are panicking you, but better safe than sorry. Some people have probably run on normal UL without any issues, but it's your baby m8, I bet you'll want to look after her

Best of luck.

Redline, seems very strange and could well be down to fuel.I test drove a STi7 and what hit me about it most was that it had much better low down pull than my STi4.I've also been told before by a respected tuner that Texaco fuel caused his car to det more than any other major brand(apologies to moderators if that statement is unacceptable)
