Default Getting hot .Losing water somewhere

My car has been getting thirsty lately and temperature guage rising. Having to top up water every 2 days or so. At first thought it could be to real hot weather making the car drink more. Took the car 200 miles the other day with the temperature being fine on motorway and A roads. As soon as i get to my destination on b roads the car starts to get hot when idling at traffic lights etc. After topping with lots of water car seems fine.Decide to drive home 200 miles with loads of water on board .Get all the way home without the temp guage moving.Park at my mates house for 2 hours then top up water and go to drive home only get 1 mile and cars getting hot so pullover. Ring my mate who comes to meet me open rad cap let the water **** out. Then refill with cold water start the car temp guage is fine .so drive car back to my mates where its now waiting to be collected by the AA and taken to my local garage who normally work on the car. Whats baffled me is the car has run a 400 mile trip with virtually no problem .Then on short stop/start runs it overheats quickly. Thinking could be head gaket ,Dodgy water pump,Knackered thermostat althougth fans are working. Spoken to my local garage who say they will pressure test it first for air locks but thing is cars not leaking so where is the water getting lost. Only just had engine job for oil leaks aswell. Anyone have any ideas of suffered similar problems.

Thanks
James

If theres no leaks its gotta be a head gasket, have you checked your oil 2 see if its got water in it?

could be that your radiator is partially blocked so its ok at speed with the large airflow but soon as you slow down the temp rises, still doesnt explain where the waters going tho.

Warm engine, remove cap off expansion tank, rev car, watch to see if water flows out, if so you have an air block in your system which could be caused by a couple of things but the biggest is head gasket failure

My bugeye was losing its coolant a few months back.

As with yours, I couldn't tell where it was going (no puddle on the floor)

Also had the supposed symptoms of head gasket failure (bubbles in the expansion tank etc).

The garage pressure tested it, and it turned out to be a radiator hose.

Hope yours is also nothing major

Just for future reference a healthy engine and cooling system shouldnt use any water over a short period.

Thanks for your advice lads . Hoping is a minor fault somewhere as ive only just forked out £1000 for an engine out job to fix two major oil leaks from both rocker covers ,Fit new clutch,Fit GGR uprated oil pump,Lightened pulleys and new timing belt. Fingers crossed this may be a little less expensive.

Finally found the leak its coming from a steel pipe that runs underneath the turbo. There are two steel pipes and the lower one is leaking it also has a banjo bolt in it.It runs down near the rocker cover and changes from a rubber pipe to a steel pipe . Anyone know the name of this pipe?Anyone had similar trouble? The car is an MY($ WRX RA.
