Default Should I Bother With An Induction Kit?

Or should I not?

If so, what's the best kit to get for my MY95 WRX Classic?

Cheers,
Steve

It's widely regarded that simply fitting a free flowing panel filter (green, K&N, blitz etc) in your existing airbox is the best thing you can do, as induction kits often do little other than suck in hot air as they are unshielded from the heat of the engine bay, often actually reducing power.

If you still want an induction kit, stay away from the "oiled" types such as HKS, as the filter oil contaminates the MAF sensor leading to potentially terminal engine problems if left unnoticed. Instead, opt for a "dry" filter like the Apexi one.

Hope this helps,

Brian.

Think i'll just whack a panel filter in.

What about cold air feeds, you know the sort that relocates the induction kit to the inner wing?

I put a second hand pipercross indution kit on my last scoob and it nothing but make loads of noise so I made my own cold air box from a few sheets of ally and some insulation matting. Could tell a difference then, cost no more than £60 and looked quite trick too.

These are still induction kits, but draw in colder air due to their location in the wing. Two problems with them are that they tend to have quite small filters due to lack of space in the wing, therefore don't offer much in the way of improved flow rate over a panel filter, and they can also get quite dirty.

As for cold air feeds from the bumper to the filter, it's easy for debris from outside to overpower the filter and you end up sucking a lot of crap/oil/water into the engine.

If anything it should be one of the last steps in the quest for more power, as they only become a necessity when a front mounted intercooler is fitted, or on big power applications where flow becomes an issue.

Panel upto 340BHP then you really need to go induction. something like an Apexi would do the job, but you will have to put up with a fair bit of noise unless you build a bespoke heatshiled/enclosure and run a cold feed to it.

For a cold air feed with the existing filter housing see THIS. However, DO NOT consider ducting air directly into the airbox from the front of the car, as this may overwhelm the filter with water, dirt and oil and risk MAF failure. Best to let the muck be caught in the lower wing and let the air find its own way into the induction system.

Agree with the comments about I/K's. They tend to offer no performance improvement unless already above 320bhp and are provided a suitable cold air feed, and have a habit of killing MAF's by either shaking them to bits or contaminating them with oil. Green, K&N and JR Racing panels are all proven and respected. ITG have some worrying history with Scoobs. The STi is well respected, but is a serviceable item and hence will need replacing every 10k miles, whereas the others recommended are lifetime products. Also, the STi filter was found to have less flow than the OE paper filter in a test by Scoobymag.

Agree with Scott T

dont bother until the o.e arrangment starts too become restrictive at 340-350 ish

Helps if you can shield it.

Avoid HKS and Blitz items as they do not filtrate very well at all- K&N and Apexi are good choices.

I'd go with the panel filter.. Unless you phsyically seperate the induction kit from the rest of the engine bay it will be drawing in hot air.

Thumbs up

I've had the stainless mesh HKS item - dont buy, too much sh*t inside the air filter to be healthy for engine/injectors.

I run a cold air kit from APS with K&N filter (massive item), still just fits inside wing and boy does it sound nice on boost - you get the hiss. Def if big power required, buy cold air kit.

Not trying to sell no just recommending what i ve used and where i got mine. its not located in the wing by the way and uses a stainless steel cone filter inside the carbon heatshield , this means it has greatly improved rate of flow .

I think APS CAI uses RU-3130 K&N filter. Its rated 700 CFM. I'll be ordering one and will do my custom cold air intake.

dogpole: Have you recently checked/cleaned the air filter? I have look at the front inner wing yesterday and it was not dirty as I expected. I'm thinking of isolating the inner wing but not sure if it really needs.

ive just done this little mod today using your guide and its spot on.
i think you quoted about 20 mins? it took me a little longer
you suggest using tape to seal around the wing holes but i chopped the top end of the resonator so i retained the pipework fittings which kept it looking as it was, i cant see a problem with this. i noticed a slight audible intake noise which is good and i am tempted to run some form of cold air to the box now, which i know is not the best idea.
