How long has it been like this mate? You would'nt get 50 miles if the big ends had gone....
Does it make the noise in neutral just reving or only when driving, cause it could be gearbox.....
Shimy.

I'm no mechanic but i've had 2 cars now where the big ends have let go.... and you WILL no about it straight away if thats the case.
Both times sitting at about 75-80 (yes yes tut tut) and then you gradually loose power, the car wont rev and you eventually come to a stop with a dead engine. You'll try starting it which will be usless..... both times i left the car for around an hour and tried starting again.... although it fired up you could hear the internals ratteling about. I personally have never bothered rebuilding an engine which had the big ends go.. just bought a recon engine.
Its prob something like the exhaust heat sheild near the down pipe, mine rattled like a f*cker over 4K, I dont have any heat sheilds now.

A light rattle would be top end bearings, bottom end would be a deep thudding. The top end bearings shud be heard by lightly reving engine up to about 2-3k in neutral.
I would suspect a heatshield, it was the duct leading cold air from bonnet vent to top of turbo on mine- a bolt had fell out. simple.
