Question ESL ecu for newbie ?

Hi there guys & girls,

Have a 95 JDM WRX Wagon (TD04)( auto, stop sniggering in the back !!! )
before anyone says what an idiot I was for buying an auto I spend around 2 hrs a day nose to tail commuting which swung the decision for me.

Car is currently totally stock & frankly I'm fairly happy with it, pretty sure my old saab 9000 2.3 HPT would have killed it at any speed or gear though, that is until the road becomes a little wet !!

Have searched extensively here, NASIOC etc... regarding best bang for buck upgrades & think the following is my best option...

1. Panel filter within standard airbox & remove "resonator" from airbox (£0)
2. ESL daughterboard ( £200 missed the GB unfortunately ! )
3. Catless downpipe ( ebay job around £100 )
4. Catless midsection ( ebay £ ?? ) would like to leave backbox standard

youve probably all guessed cash is pretty limited

loads of people suggest that a upgraded TQ converter ( high stall ) is the best way to make a difference off the line which is probably true but having already had my tranny rebuilt once ( extracted & reinstalled by myself with no assistance in my driveway !! ) I dont really fancy having to do that again !

does this sound reasonable or have I missed something worthwhile ?

thanks in advance for your opinions,

SS.

Hi and welcome
I'm looking to mod my wagon in much the same way you are. (only mines not auto though ).
I'm not a huge fan of big exhausts myself but isn't the standard back box very restrictive?!
Wouldn't a 2.5"/3" give a better flow and not look to bad.

Hi Orbix,

your probably right about the back box..

pet peave of mine is the current fixation for massive & multiple exhaust pipes, many of which increase noise levels to instant headache levels ( re 2hr commute ! ) most of them on silly little cars, there are several "boy racers" around where I live the worst I've see so far was a Pugeot 106 ( I think ) with 5 !!! exit pipes !!! yeah I'm serious ! of course only 1 of them is actually connected to the engine.. I know your not suggesting I do this, but given the high concentration of coppers in the area ( probably due to all the non standard exhausts ! ) I really would like to keep the backbox standard & quiet.

Now the first wave of people with ESL chips are reporting good things about them I'm certain you'd get another GB off the ground as one of the main issues with a lot of people was "I'm not willing to try this in my engine without some feedback on it first". Great little chips, I'm on my 3rd tank of optimax with mine and not a single problem with it ye, except it makes me drive way too fast everywhere i go

Its probably a stupid question but I am a newbie
would an ECU from an old legacy ( UK non turbo ) which I think is marked D7 be usable in my 95 JDM WRX impreza after adding a ESL daughterboard ?

I would guess no ( mostly cause no turbo ? ) but it does appear to have the right connectors.

Email Andy at ESL, he'll be able to tell you!

I can't see a problem if the Leggy ECU is a 4 plug as the new ECU will read the MAP on the chip, not the Leggy board.
