Default Fuel tank size

Did a 240 mile round trip in my 1993 classic on the weekend. Filled up before I left and drove all the way home on a tank, the needle went way through the empty mark as I have read there is still 1/4 of a tank left on the E.

Filled it back up when i got home and it took 53 litres to the brim.

How close did I come to running out of fuel?

mine takes approx 40 litres when its on E (I know this as it cost me just over 40 quid to fill it at 101 per litre. Mine is also a 92/93. I think the earlier cars had a 50 litre tank. Do a search I am sure there are quite a few different topics on this, including one for pslewis saying he had a 45 litre tank!!
