The WRX engines do vary across the years but not by alot; the bracing around the cylinders has increased so more modern ones can take higher boost pressures. WRX powers do start at around 210 - 225 in standard form so higher figures than this have probably been modifed. You can get 280 on standard turbo etc so it may just have been the map that has been changed though other bits may also have been changed (exhaust, filter etc).

not quite true, the earlier cars actually allegedly had stronger blocks (closed deck) which meant there was less chance of cylinder distortion. As the cars were developed, the ecu maps were changed allowing higher boost etc and along with other changes like cylinder heads, possibly cam profiles and injectors, these have given the different power outputs through the years.

Shorty, if you are in the process of getting a car be careful especially of the autotrader, there are a lot of wrx cars advertised as 280ps models when in fact they are probably only 240ps

All WRX variants have the same engine, but different ECU's to go with the different turbos's used (td04 & tdo5), hence the reason for varying power outputs.

The engines differ on the STI versions, these have stronger internals and the engine has been blue printed.
