Default exhaust cutout

Instead of having a Y cut out I was thinking of placing it in the middle of the exhaust. With the thing opened the exhaust would flow normal but with it closed it would block 90% of the exhaust flow so the sound wouldnt be so loud, kind of like a silencer?...of course when closed it would still have a bit of airflow. You think this would work? I can have my exhaust loud most of the time, its when if there is a road block I just need to make sure my exhaust is quiet going thru the check point.

something like this..sorry for the confusion

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Elect...spagenameZWDVW

put this in the middle of the test pipe. in normal operation it would be opened. When I want the exhaust quiet I close 90% of the flap so that most of the exhaust flow is blocked... would this work?

I would love to do this, but all the ones I see have three bolt flanges and are designed for Y-pipes. I did think that I could drill some holes in it so that in the closed position it still allowed enough flow to be quiet.

Fujitsubo make a system that has an in car controller where you can vary the levels to make it sound almost like a standard system right up to a Group N system.

Yep.

I've seen one in action a couple of years ago, it was on a JDM STi V8 that I was going to buy from Wicked Kit before I got the Type R and although its a bit gimicky, it worked very well and sounded great.

Looks just what I want but I don't think they do them for the Evo.

Thanks, nothing I can actually find though from Gruppe-S. Google doesn't reveal much else that I have been able to find.

Gruppe-S
Hi guys,

Regarding the GT series turbo kit from Helix, the kit should be available by summer. The prototype versions were made with tubular manifolds, which has been decided may not be compatible with the US market. Therefore the manifold is being cast right now. Casting takes an extremely long time (often more than 150 days) due to tooling development. I believe the turbos will be using a custom spec garrett BB cartridge, and there will be one geared towards track, and one geared towards drag.

The titanium exhaust is also being worked on, we should actually see some prototypes in the next few weeks.

Should be a pretty good year for Helix, there are some electronic components coming out in the next few months, including an electronically adjustable exhaust system (similar to Fujitsubo's Viable).

Cheers,

Gary

Sent them a query. The post above was over a year ago.

Seems like a niche market to have a quiet performance exhaust.

Sorry about that

I seem to remember that was the selling point for Jetex systems...

"Jetex, The Quiet Performer"

Although I seriously doubt they make systems for Japanese applications, from what I remember they were aimed at the VW's etc?

Revolution=Jetex AFAIK, and I thought my Revolution 3" exhaust was loud - with THREE extra resonators it was OK. I want something that sounds like stock or PPP level, not a WWII bomber like most people seem to want

A friend of mine has an VIII FQ300 with decat HKS Super Drager. Whilst he had the bung in the backbox, that was really quiet and to be honest, even without it, its still pretty quiet until he opens it up then its fairly loud.

I have Mongoose 3" with a resonator. It is apparently quieter than the stock FQ340 system I have in the attic but never fitted, although that does have a bung, plus it is less than 2.5" in places, for 400 BHP that is a bit marginal.
