Phase 1 and Phase 2 Query
Is it possible to use the pistons, rods, crank etc... from a phase 1 uk MY97/98engine block and re-use them into a Phase 2 UK MY00 impreza i know the manifold and ecu is different.
This is driving me nuts as i have a working phase 1 engine but my impreza is a phase 2 as kindly diagnosed by peanuts on a previous thread.
I Have my Phase 2 Engine being looked at at the mo poss big end damage, and wondered if i could use the bits from the Phase 1 engine too save on yet more cost

I am sure you can swap the heads and manifolds over from your knackered engine onto the phase one and everything will be okay. The only difference I think between the 2 bottom ends is the bearings. Someone with more knowledge though will probably be around in a bit to answer

you can use the bottom end complete, but the crank in your early engine will not swap straight into the later block.....................
as above use the short motor and swap all the later parts on to it

One thing you MUST take into account though, and that's the head gaskets.
You'll need to use the STi3/4 steel head gaskets, NOT the '99 > steel head gaskets which are too thin.
The overall CR will be very slightly lower than standard with the Phase one bottom, and Phase 2 top, but it will be marginal.
Mark.
