Had a front wheel bearing replaced recently on my classic, part was about £90, plus labour came to £140 total.

Your looking at about £60 for non genuine bearing and £140 for genuine subaru bearing, plus 1.5 hours labour.

£45 for the bearing from most autofactors..

Its not a bad job really either, couple of hours max.. As long as the hub isnt damaged and the bearing hasnt seized onto the stub axle.

Better get it done quick or this might happen:

You dont need a press, a big mallet will the do the job just fine.

The bearing has started going on mine aswell, and want to change it asap.

One siezed on my old car and the wheel sheered off, way lucky that i was only going very slow at the time.......15 mins before i was going 140+ (private runway officer), god knows what would have happened it it had gone then!!!

£180 sounds good if your getting genuine parts, still doesnt mean the genuine part isnt at a rip off price!

Your looking at about 2 hours labour MAX!

@ Average /hour = £35 x 2 = £70 + £50 parts..

anything up to £140 would be a fair price IMHO..

Personally I think you should give it a crack yourself, its an easy job.

Its not a 'easy' job if there is anything stuck inside or if you are not mechanically minded and have never done it. Also excess force with a mallet runs the risk of cracking the bearing casing via shock (done it myself), really a press should be used if possible.

A bearing costs £32+vat from Mill Auto/Part co etc, not a Subaru one tho but works just as well.

As said above, a decent mechanic will be able to sort it within 2 hours max.

Davey - thats one mean mashed up stub axle!!!!

nasty !

i think where i got the woute from they used geniune subaru parts so that'll be wwhy its £180

Anyone got a garage near Watford Herts can do a front wheel bearing cheaper than that ?

Dont fancy the mallet bit unpredictable i dont wanna be breaking stuff, if id seen someone else do i might have a go .

A pneumatic press will cost you several hundred pounds, you'll then need a beefy compressor to run it.
