Heat shield question .
Hope someone can help , heard a strange rattle under the car so put it on ramps and found the shield on the offside header/manifold has a crack in it. There is some sort of sensor in it. What is it and how easy is it to break ? I could do with getting the shield off to get it brazed or welded but can't see any way of removing the shield without taking the sensor out first.
Cheers Nigel .

They can be a bitch to remove as they seize in the exhuast, and to top it off they are usually made of a soft metal to prevent them from shafting the thread on the manifold when they come out..
Get the appropriate size crows foot socket and heat the manifold around the sensor with oxy propane or take the car for a brisk spin before you start work. It should come out when the pipe is nice and hot.

Permission to be dim please. What's a crows foot socket ? I'm thinking it maybe easier to get it welded / brazed in situ ,less risk of damaging things I know too little about.

Had mine rattling a while back sti type r ,when an after market exhaust was fitted the lug that holds down the shield to the original exhaust didn't fit so was left off causing the rattle.
I took off the shield took it to a mates workshop cut it in half welded where necesary and refitted BINGO no more rattle, the shield would never have fitted to my new exhaust .hope this helps, you could weld in situ but remember to use a fire blanket ...

A picture speaks a thousand words:
You can use a spark plug remover or a long socket but you will need to cut the wires off the Lambda making it useless and costing lots of money.
