Quick, Easy & Cheap tuning for 97MY ?
What is the best place to start for a little more ooommph? Some suggestions would be nice.
I have a 97MY Turbo 2000 - I believe they are trickiest for bolt on engine mods...
Having done a rolling road run and found a peak power of 241.9 hp, with the only possible mods affecting power being a STi7 rear box and a Pipercross panel filter, I am now intrieged by the possiblility of getting the curve 'just a little' higher. The AFR was 10:1 or less from 4000 rpm upwards and boost ~ 0.9 bar from 3200 - 5000 rpm & then tailed off.
Harvey suggested a GBE valve to nudge the boost up to 1 bar that should be OK given the excess standard fueling in this range.
Any suggestions on how to go about this - or other ideas - old car so not looking to spend too much on it...
Cheers
Mick

Thanks guys...
I was hoping for some suggestions and approx costs. But yes budget fairly tight and DIY preffered - don't mind getting hands dirty...
Harveys suggestion of the GBE valve, to increase boost a little, looked as though it must be a fairly cheap option - not much in the way of hardware there as far as I could see - mainly a bit of time & a boost guage to set up???
I'd like to keep the car legal and had contemplated removing 2nd cat in centre section as I have heard it would still pass the MoT with just the front cat - so that would suit me fine - saw a de-cat centre go for £62 on ebay this week - is that a good price? - what about removing old part and removing cat brick - then garage don't even know you've made a mod
does wrapping std headers make a benefit without porting?

I put a manual boost controller (£18 from eBay) on mine, pushed my boost up to about 1.2Bar and made a massive difference to performance.... Best £18 I ever spent
However - you will need a boost gauge fitted to set it up.
Oh - And YHPM means You Have Personal Mail - look by your username at the top right of the screen for your Private Messages

Decat downpipe ( 2nd hand maybe £100, new maybe £160 ? ), keep catted centre ( or change back for MOT time decat pipe £60 - £80 ? - their MOT exhaust gas machine doesn't care whats in the pipes, just what gas comes out! ) and get a GBE or Dawes device manual boost controller around £20 - £40 ? and set to around 1.15 bar so below fuel cut. Next Air filter change, fit a STi Grp A panel air filter for the air box ( about £40 ).
Use good synthetic oil and change every 3000 miles or so!
Later on, get a set of ported exhaust headers lagged, off Harvey or similiar .
Boost gauge - from £20 plus some mounting arrangement upwards
Enjoy!

Better to get the flywheel lightened to aound 8 - 8.5 kg, for about £100 ( Or les if you have a local friendly machine shop ) and when changing clutch fit that.

Hiya Mick.
I tuned my MY98 (same tuning issues as the MY97) about 12 months ago, and posted my experiences here:

Car's going strong and I've been really pleased with the improvements in driveability. Hope this gives you some help.

1. Lighter pullies ( and flywheel too ) mean less weight for the engine to spin around when accelerating, so revs up faster and feels faster / more sporty. Not really a BHP gain, but more effective and faster use of what you do have.
Too light can cause problems on fast starts and idle quality as there is notthe weight of metal spinning around to keep the engine going...
2. Some light pulley sets are smaller diameter " underdriven" so use less power to drive their parts ( air con pump or alternator for example ).
Again, no increase in power.
Think I got that all right!
