Default Power steering whinning/juddering

hello and any help greatly appreciated.i have been getting a whinning noise from my power steering for about three weeks now. staring from when i had my cam belt replaced. i was told that the p/steering belt was too tight. (fluid level is ok). i got a mate to slacken off the belt but it hasn't worked. it is still whinning when im either turning a corner or parking. i also noticed recently that if i put my foot on the brake , and turn the steering wheel, i get this juddering coming up through the steering column/wheel. the front wheels also dont move smoothly but judder about aswell at this point. thanks for any help and advice given p.s sorry. the car is a 1997 impreza turbo 2000. have read Swift Cee's thread but i think mine has got something to do with the power steering

I pulled my hair out for ages trying to track down a whining that I was sure was the PS but the fluid seemed OK. Then on the advice of someone on here, I got some PS fluid anyway, poured in a little and the level stayed the same. Poured in a little more and it still stayed the same...in the end I think it took something like a quarter of a litre without the level even moving, then it very slowly started to rise. It's a badly designed header tank that looks full but isn't. Once I'd finished and had it up to the full mark, I gave it a few turns lock to lock, and the job was done, back to blissful power steering silence again!

Brilliant! Glad it worked for you. When I heard that little nugget of advice myself I couldn't believe it would work but there you go. It's cool when something turns out to be so easily fixed.

Any particular power steering fluid I should use on my v5 STi Type-R, available at Halfords?

I'm experiencing the same symptoms as the above.

Thanks.

I was just about to ask this same question!

I'd also be interested in which oil to get as I'm off to Halfords this weekend!

Most ATF fluid will be fine.

Been to Halford's purchased the necessary fluid for the power steering. They didn't have any Dexron as the cap on the reservoir says to use. The direct replacement according to Halfords for a UK classic is Halfords Transmission and Power Steering Fluid D11 General Motors GM-6137M. Sold in 1 ltr bottles for around £5.99

I filled up the power steering reservoir tank nearly to the top. Used the car today for about 25 mins. The whine has disappeared so I guess it's cured the problem.

Thanks for everyone's advice.
