At around 1500-2000 rpm, my boost solenoid sounds like a woodpecker, although performance seems fine. So I would also be interested to know if this is normal or not, might it mean that it may need maintaining/cleaning soon?

It shouldn't do anything under light revs assuming you mean when in vacuum?
Do you both have an aftermarket ecu? i.e. been re-mapped?

I have a standard ECU.

If I lift the bonnet and blip the throttle lightly the boost solenoid gives a
tappety noise, not loud, but quiet like.

Car runs like a dream, I just hadn't noticed it before.

The std ecu on some MYs (early cars especially) drives the boost solenoid at max duty at low loads to promote spoolup, if you can hear it then it is more likely to be caused by the rubber mounts failing than by the solenoid on its way out.

Don't ever remember mine doing that when i ran std ecu.(later car MY99)
The solenoid is only there to bleed off air to achive boost targets, so shouldn't be doing anything when you're in vacuum cause it's not trying to achieve any boost.
If it does fail, you can pick one up on the for sale forums for around 30 quid.
Not a lot goes wrong with them. They ether work or they don't. Sometimes they can get gummed up and need cleaning out, but that's about it.
You haven't got the ecu reset plugs connected have you? single black, single green connectors under the dash (can never remember which one does what)

Mine ticks, has done for well over year, maybe longer, just noticed it for the first time abotu 1.5 years ago. I asked the same question and the answer seemed to be "its normal, don't worry".

My car still runs great. I do have a scoobyecu on it, don't know if that is related...

Mine is on a standard ecu, sounds like we have nothing to worry about anyway. It is a solenoid, so I suppose it is meant to click. I guess it is something to investigate if we ever have boost problems.
