Default td05 16 on sti

Ok I made the mistake of lots and am thinking about changing to sti......
Currently on 280/280 my03 wrx. I have various bits that I haven't changed over yet as I was going for 350+ but obviously will need an sti gearbox, so if i put the money for the gearbox with my car plus some I can get one.

Question is do I keep my td05 16 to go on the 03sti? Will this give me more torque/power than the standard vf? Assume all supporting mods as I have them already.

Tuts,

There are plenty of newage WRX owners running 350+ bhp without switching to an STI 6 speed box

I realise that but am still unsure.
Part of me wants to keep mine but I also want better brakes etc. Haven't made my mind up yet. If you add up the cost of it all it doesn't make much sense....On the other hand it is cheaper road tax lol.

Was just wondering if I do swap should I sell the td05 to go towards the sti or will it give better torque/power than the vf on the sti?

For the money you would spend swapping to an STi now you could splash out on the WRX and have a real STi killer

It's just a matter of pending wisely....

lol I think I've made my mind up. Already have the td05 and intercooler ready to go on. Just need some injectors and pump. It would be a shame not to fit them now wouldn't it.........

Have seen an 03 for 13k so I could knock him down a bit. Depends what i get for an 03wrx though. Not sure its worth it now. Was just one of those things that you think is a good idea. I've got all the bits bar a pump and injectors, I just need to sort out the brakes...

If the difference is just 3-4k it may well be worth going for an STi. Price the bits up.

6 Speed Gearbox = £2000
Brakes = £1000?
Intercooler= ?
Turbo = ?
etc etc

Plus you get a stronger engine, turbo/intercooler etc all already in place for 350bhp. And it will always hold a premium price over the WRX, so in reality may work out better financially.

Bearing in mind Tuts target figures of 350+, IMHO there would still have to be quite an investment in money to achieve these figures with an STI

I would still think that in reality it would be more economical to start with an STi base.

If he is after a real 350+ then he will need more than what he has now anyway.

for a TD05 16G the WRX is a better bet IMHO

Should't need a 6 speed box (in any case the ratios of the 5 speed seem OK to me) and the OEM FPR and dump dump valve are up for the job.

The Sti intercooler is a pretty good item for 330 odd BHP

so it's

Injectors. ask Ninnybobs where he got his from
Fuel pump. www.asperformance.com (alyn)
Ported headers. £100 swap with Harvey
De-cat
good air filter
Oil
EcuTeK remap (Bob Rawle)

Good for 325 odd BHP and a shade under 300 torque

I already have most of the bits.

Currently fitted are:
H+S decat up pipe
Prodrive sports cat down pipe
Prodrive decat centre and back box
Sti panel filter

This gives me 280/280.

Bits I have but need to fit:
TD05 16G
Sti intercooler and scoop
Sti intercooler spray

Bits to buy:
Injectors
Pump
Another map
Headers

The original idea was to sell my bits (but maybe keep the turbo, hence the question at the top) and put the money towards an sti but I'd still have to spend more money on the sti so am sticking with what I have.

Kind of makes the thread irrelevant now!

Oh forgot, already have Sti spoiler and front bumber/fog covers, they came on the car and must be good for an extra 200bhp

Hope you have budgeted for a gearbox if you use the 16g to its potential.

Bob, are you a union member for the HSFSB?

(Help save five speed boxes)

the 754 box will withstand a little more than the 752, itll still die, but itll take longer to succumb.

Just helping people realise that the true cost of going for those numbers costs serious money - an oversight I had on my project in all honesty.

Does the 754 have stronger gearsets or something?

Maybe I should have gone for a OE 754 instead of a PAR/PPG?

no its the casing thats is stronger apparently....just helps to keep it all together a bit longer, more bolts holding it to the car too....8 compared to 4 or something like that...

i think youll do just fine with the PAR/PPG

Thanks for all the info guys.

I realise the box might or might not go. Seems to depend on luck and how you drive. People on here have ragged them and been ok, others have lost them on standard cars.

Will probably get a 6 speed from a breakers or from on here, have seen them about.

Or how about an uprated 5 speed set in my box?

How much?

And are you better with a slightly lower ratio set to improve accel but keep your original 5th or will it destroy 5th too?

Ideally would like them a bit lower but also need to Mway cruise. What do you think the best option is?

Expect your box to break but hope it holds out for as long as it can

6 Speeds are £1500-2000+fitting
Uprated gearsets £1700(ish)+VAT+Rebuild labour+other required parts - (Just under £3k)

If that looks steep you could just map for lower boost/power. TD05 feels nice at low boost too.

i just got 311/290 at powerstation yesterday on my 2001 wrx with a vf34. thats with full de-cat, ported headers, sti intercooler, 3 port boost solenoid and a 255lph fuel pump. it didnt need the 550cc sti injectorsas it was getting plenty of fuel. im just going to take it easy with my gearbox and hope it holds out, its also still got the standard clutch so not sure how much longer that will survive for.

There's a thread on SN somewhere about the difficulties spotting "ordainary" OEM clutches made by exeddy and the uprated versions !!

Now going for an AP clutch from AS Performance when I can get some spare time

I've got a new OEM bugeye exeddy clutch in the garage......... just not sure what to do with it LOL

Shaun

Blimey Martin 130 5.5k launches.........that's a lot of grief for the OEM clutch / gearbox !!
