exhaust popping

can someone give me some advice i have a 2000 classic and it keeps back firing. is it something to do with the air filter ( piper cross ) it also smells to be running rich any help please

after market filters dump valves etc mess with the fuelling settings of the ecu causing backfires albiet infrequent good for scaring shoppers in the high street

Sorry to be so thick but does that mean that i will have to get a re map or something like that. back fires are not to bad but it is happing all the time went passed a funeral the other day the people didnt look to impressed
