Default Check Engine and running fan

Can anyone help me? I am seriously bored with one thing and then another going wrong with my car.

Today it is struggling to start, the check engine light is on and the fans are running as soon as you get to the first click.

Can anyone point in the right direction of what to check?

Thanks.

If the fans are running then the ecu is going through its check sequance. Are the diagnostic wires connected?

temp sensor would be the best bet, can cause hard starting and it makes the fans run all the time in case it is over heating code 21 when you put the plugs together to check for fault codes.

OK, I am assuming that the diagnostic wires and plugs are the same thing?

Really thick I am afraid.....can someone please tell me where they are so I can check?

What do I need to do and check for when I do this? Which light flashes or where is the code?

Sorry for the daft questions!!!

They are situated right up under the drivers side footwell, around the steering column area. There will be tho green conecters, and two black connecters. connect the blacks together to run a fault cide check.

The check engine light will flash in a sequance, long flashes are 10s short flashes are 1s.

recently my fans came on and the temp gauge soared to the red, also the CEL came on,but i don't know how to check the codes

turned out to be an earth cable had come off the inlet manifold.

don't know if your problem is similar, mines an my00 and the 'bad' lead was to the right of the inlet manifold, could be worth a check, thing is though mine conked out and had to be towed to a garage

Thanks everyone. I now have the fault code and it is the coolant sensor.

I am a little happier about this now as I think I can change it myself....carefully and trying to avoid twisted fingers!

Is it the bolt type thing with two wires going to it in the cast metal thing that runs between the two heads below the big air intake pipe from the air filter? If that makes sense!

If temp guage goes to top the sensor wire is earthed. It could be a faulty sensor on the water temp.

Thanks for that. It doesn't got right up so I suspect it is the sensor itself.

Can anyone help with it's location? I am taking it it is the one with two wires?????
