Last week the local Subaru garage replaced my MAF due to oil contamination, apparently the garage that serviced the car before I bought it over filled the oil and it drained through the intake.

Since I've had the car back there's been an issue with cold idle. When I first start the car from cold it idles between 1200 and 1800 rpm, slowly rising and falling, occaisionally settling at 1500 rpm for a few seconds.

As it starts to warm up, if I lightly apply throttle pressure the revs build slowly to 1500rpm and then jump to about 2k, almost as though it's holding back up to 1500rpm and then a 2nd throttle body opens or the turbo comes on boost.

It's still under warranty so I don't want to start messing about myself yet, but I'd like an idea so when the dealer tries to fob me off I know he's talking through has ***.

looking at the engine from the front of the car look to the right of the inlet, the is a thing which is stuck on the manifold, that has a few tubes going in to it, 2 for water cooling and another bigger one for air.

this controlls the idle speed, if the was a load of oil on it it can stick easily.
it should only need a clean.

let subaru do it if u have a warrenty, they cost £280, wen i cleaned my one the crap fellin to the bearing, which well buggered it.

 

Cheers, I'll have a quick look in th daylight tomorrow, I have little faith in the local scooby dealer. When they changed the MAF they refitte it with a couple random srews, one flat blade and one cross-head, and it took them 2 attempts to find a MAF covered in engine oil

there a solenoid on top of it you can, take it off with 2 screws then twist the shaft under it with ya hand, it should be free. just mark out wer it was, if you put it back in the wrong angle the engine might not start or it will idle at 3000 rpm
