Smoked gauges anybody got them
I was having a look at these. I think they just arent visible when the ignition is switched off. As soon as it is you should see them day or night. Is this right Tim ?
the autogauge ones i have are only dark when the ignition is off, light up when the engine is started, they do look great at night, but can be hard to read in the daytime as the light reflects off the glass.....
I've got the auto gauge ones in a defi style pod. Work well at night or on an overcast day but reflect a lot on a sunny day. Tried the stealth and stealth 2. The latter are easier to read in bright light but still aren't perfect. You can read the numbers fine but the needle doesn't show up that well when sunny. The needle doesn't seem to light up as well as it could. Combination of that and the red paint on it doesn't seem to be day glow enough (the dash needles are very dayglow red). Considering opening one up to try and light the needle better or maybe repaint the top surface of it. Not sure how easy this would be to do and still keep the gauge looking untouched.
it just when its really sunny that they are sometimes hard to read, mostly they are fine, and excellent at night...... and you wouldnt want to read them with ignition off........

Sorry to crash the thread, i've got the gauges and they can be an ****. Has anybody had problems with the oil temp gauge? I've got the bizare problem that my gauge doesn't work in the afternoon but its fine at night and in the morning. doesn't matter how hot the engine is. My only thoughts are a dodgy sender or that the body warms up so the ground isn't as good. Any ideas??
I have them too, they came with the car, and I can't see them when it's a bright day. Perhaps there is some sort of spray or stick on coating you can get to make them non-reflective. If I was buying new I would go for white background with black digits and clear glass. Don't think much of the boost gauge either, needle fluctuates a lot, needs better damping.
Also when you turn on the ignition they do this fancy thing when they go all the way over and then come back down again, well i have not got round to fitting mine properly yet i just have them lit up for now but the oil pressure gauge sticks at the end don't know if this is were it's surposed to rest or what.
oil pressure gauge sticks at the end because the sender needs to be earthed correctly before it will work.....had the same problem with mine, turned the ignitin on and the needle went straight round to the max without the engine even being started...... its because the sender is now remotly sited off the block so dos not get a good earthing.... added a bit of wire to the sender body and all is well
Fitted two of these gauges in a pillar pod a couple of months ago and had the same issues you guys are getting. Oil pressure needs additional earth else it sits on max and on a sunny day they're very difficult to see. If your foot to the floor you wouldn't want to start squinting at the guages as they take to long to read. I wouldn't buy these gauges again, I'd go for plain glass. I wonder if I could take the bezzals off and change the glass???
