The turbo @ £850 / 500 new/secondhand
Bigger TMIC/FMIC @ £400 max
550/Walbro/SX regulator @ £400 new/secondhand
3'' exhaust/Sti :Green panel filter or cone depending on IC@ £800
Decent mappable ecu, say Apexi@ £800 mapped
Decent clutch @ £500 fitted

Chat with the insurance man @ £x

Several other 'nice' things can be done, but it is all bolt on.

I glad you like it, it's taken 6 yrs to get there!

No more major mods planned at the mo but i'm booked for a map tweek with Bob after fitting a SX reg and i'm swapping from BP to BP+NF so should sqweeze a wee bit more out of her

When i bought the car it was fitted with a paddle clutch which was an utter pain in the **** and impossible to pull away smoothly, Had the AP fitted after a rebuild and it's very nice to use although only rated to 350lb/ft I've heard of them coping a lot more than that, in fact i think Harvey Smith uses one on his STi 6 with a silly amount of torque!

Most people i have spoekn to have said the 20G is better suited to the sti's higher rev limit as i wanted to go down the 18G route.
Why would you go down the 18G route?

Not that i don't like the 20g's delivery it just has it's issues with surging, and the 18g is meant to have mental mid range punch, mind you that would probably be the kiss of death to a std box and i doubt that it will run out of puff even with the higher limiter on the STi.

Surge on the 20G is generally only an issue if you fit a large bore intake pipe. The VF36 and 37 also suffer from this.
I'm still a fan of the 20G as it makes its boost more efficiently than an 18G.

In my experience you will find a greater difference in performance between 2 different cars on the same turbo than you will between the 2 different turbos on the same car.
eg you will hear of an 18g at 380bhp and a 20g at 370bhp but you also hear of the 20g making 400bhp and the 18g making 350bhp
Having the correct supporting mods is far more important than whether 18g or 20g.
I still sell more 20's than I do 18's and they are the same price.

Andy what are the best supporting mods in your opinion? which single supporting mod has most bearing on the power you can make?

Can you run the standard one in this case to avoid surge then (STI3)?

Yes, you can. In my experience it is not a restriction up to 380-400bhp.

The induction, intercooler and exhaust system have a fairly equal share in how efficiently your turbo will work.

The bigger the turbo, the more critical the correct choice becomes.
