Default Diagnostics leads connected for some reason?

Can anyone think of why someone would plug the diagnostics leads together and leave them plugged in? I found that the check light bulb had been removed so I refitted it.. No light at first but when the car was driven it began flashing, now I thought this was a bit strange as it should only flash in diagnostics mode, I looked under the dash and the leads were all connected? I unplugged them and the car is now running full boost and driving better than ever with no management light problems.

I'm assuming the silly pillock who used to own the car plugged them together when he was fitting the fog light switch or farting around with the stereo because they looked like they should be connected? Other than that I cant think why someone would do that on purpose?

The reason I think he was just a pillock is because there was some HORRENDOUS wiring in the car, he had use various bits of house mains cable to rig up the fog light and his stereo.. MUPPET!

No reason other then to mask a fault.

I sold a chip to a guy, who then complained it felt no quicker.
I told him to do an ECU reset, where he then found his diagnostic connectors where connected. He was alot happier running 1 bar+ as opposed to 0.5

Worrying that the CEL bulb had been taken out though!! They don't fall out accidentally.

Oh know it was definitely taken out, it was in the ash tray not entirely shocked, I've seen this alot of cars, normally the ABS bulb is taken out though because people cant be bothered to replace the sensors.

I thought that..... What ****** would remove the bulb to hide a fault? What car have you got mate? I'd be concerned you might have other issues with it (i.e. a failing MAF on a MY99) I'd be tempted to get someone who knows Impreza to check it out, best to be safe

What some people do......

Some upgrade chips on ebay make the CEL come on, have you checked the ECU for a chip in the spare socket?

Its a 94 WRX.. The light hasnt come on so hopefully he was just a bit of a prat and plugged them back together..

I will pop open the ECU when I get a chance and make sure its not been chipped.. if its chipped I assume I can simply remove the chip?

You'll need to re-connect the J1 resistor link if its been chipped and if its been cut, you can leave the chip in and connect the link and then it will bypass the chip and run the std map.

heard it done after a heater matrix change (someone on here I think).. whole dash has to come out and so the garage reconnected EVERYTHING! makes some sense really you find plugs that go together.. garage probably then removed the bulb.. or the owner .. etc

Cheers! Is it just a link or do I need to replace the resistor, if so do you know the value?

Cheers.

you can do it with wire.. no need for a resistor..

Doesn't sound like it will have been chipped or if it has that this is the problem as you have no CEL light.. expect the light was removed to sell it because the diagnostic plugs were connected putting the light on, unknown to them they were wrongly connected.

Thing is can you think of any reason as to why someone would connect the leads, other than stupidity?

Sorry to jump in here but am i right in thinking these are the green and th black plugs under the dash, as if so, my black ones are connected and have been since ive had it, would that affect anything? Car runs fine, no probs hence i was a bit worried disconnecting them!

cheers, Stales.

From what I can tell if you switch the ignition on (lights on the dash on) if your in diagnostics mode the rad fan pulses on and off along with various solidnoids by the drivers side turret?

that only happens with both connected I think. just wondered what effect just the black ones connected would have? I did connect the green ones when my maf was dead to find out and your right, fans etc pulsed on-off etc.
