KL activity video, is it due to gearchange..???
Me again..!
Can someone comment on these KL activity video's and tell me what they think..?
It looks like gearchange noise, but am I wrong..?
The first one actually flashed RED, however it dosen't show on vid for some reason..? It also looks like the second amber LED isn't working, but again it seems to be to the eye, although they are the briefest of flashes . I'll check them tomorrow with a spanner whack..!
PS they're ~7Mb each so BB only advisable, sorry..!

as a comparison here's another of 4th gear WOT from 2.5k resulting in the odd single green at various points in rev range and only one green on change up..!??!
Have noticed 4-5th is biggest culprit with 3-4th the other. Lower gear changes do not induce KL activity..??!!
This makes me doubt it is gear change noise..??
This ones 9Mb.. sorry..!

Does look like normal noise during gearchange, the KL will pick it up because the noise enters the frequency area where the KL listens
however it should not be able to light up the red, the red is the exact or close to frequency det occurs
i had a red light up on my KL couple of weeks ago, MAF knackered, changed and no det anymore

What's strange is that it only occurs during 3rd-4th-5th changes (4-5 being biggest worst) and them not all the time. Sometimes it'll happen during steadyish acceleration/short changes. Maybe my gearchanges leave a lot to be desired..?

KL activity on a poor map/poor MAF or poor fuelling is quite common on the up-shift.
It's a very quick transition from WOT/retarded timing (<20 DegBTDC) to lift-off/gearchange/advanced timing (>40 DegBTDC), then back to WOT/retarded
I doubt it's gearbox noise, if the box is healthy. This normally rears it's head on the lower geras i.e 1st/2nd (well it does on mine, although not enough to trigger the KL).
P.S Hae you got an induction kit ??
I've seen this sort of think before on the gearchange with an induction kit. As some of them cause large gulps of air to be taken and hence confuse the ECU to run lower down the load scale and induce more timing.
Ithink the one in question was a Blitz or HKS.

Just an end note to the thread for future search reference.
Had a little timing (<1 deg.) taken out of a few rows in the mid-range and my KL is now totally silent. No noticeable loss of performance either..!
Wasn't much (apparently a tiny spit of transitional det), but I feel a lot happier now..!

If I hit red line/fuel cut I have the same behaviour with you almost in every gear change on my WRX MY04.
Not a problem though as the ECU first cuts ignition then fuelling thus the unburnt fuel explodes lighting the KL orange or red!

276/266 at powerstation (ie realistic) last July. Put it this way, I no longer worry about 250bhp FWD cars..!
Still I've got a VF35/inj/pump in the garage that I'm toying with putting on. Should be good for ~320/320. However, I'm a bit concerned about losing the instant response that makes the car so effective on the road..!!?

My rough estimate from that vid is 2.5 secs 50-70 and 8secs 60-100 which ties in quite nicely with around 270-280 BHP.
Lift off knocklink activity is not too uncommon as Scott T says. Glad you got it sorted althoug I would be much less worried about lift off detonation then on-boost detonation.

Ive found that knocklinks really need to be calibrated to the car. Mine was set to Max on my STi and when Bob did an initial run before mapping, it was knock free, but the KL was going orange.
It was reduced about 1/4 turn and worked more accurately after that, and the remap.
I dont know the exact frequency range that the KL looks for, and nobody has yet been able to tell me - but until you know, you cant tell if its picking up gear mesh frequencies. Its easy to calc, just need the number of teeth in each gear, then multiply by speed and you get a running speed frequency. If there are bands that fit within the KL range you may pick them up.
