Default Fuel comsumption worse than a turbo!

Hiya all wondering if anyone could shed any light on this matter, I've got a 1.8GL and the fuel comsumption is worse than any of my mates turbos! (220 miles to a tank if i'm lucky!!!
what could cure this ?

not sure wether it could have anything to do with the engine having done 137k

Cheers
Tams
