Angry Lambda sensor rip-off??!!

It came to that time of the year today....the dreaded MOT.

Result- failed on emisions.

The MOT tester, apart from being employed from an old peoples home, said that the Lambda sensor needed replacing and wanted £200 for the privelige!!

I took my '97 import to another garage for an emmisions test, to check he wasnt pulling a fast one. The guy at this other place said it was JUST falling outside the perameters of passing. He wasnt sure if it was the lambda sensor or not and advised me to take it to a Scooby dealers to plug into the diagnostic machine to find out wat was going on.
Could this just be that im running a large bore exhaust and a HKS mushroom filter?? Ive still got a cat fitted.

Any advice was be much welcomed!!

200 quid for a lambda and fitting!!!!! was that including the service and valet .If that's all he wanted to do for that money ,he's taking the ****.Not that you didn't know that already.Had mine replaced 2 weeks ago for 50 quid.As far as the mot goes hard to say without being there really but the filter shouldn't make any difference.
good luck

if your only running one cat then its advisable to get it really hot and do the emissions immediately you get to the garage.
if its a genuine part they have used then its not too far off the money as the part from subaru is about £140 odd, £60 is a bit excessive for a ten minute job mind!

best off you get to partco and buy their pattern 3 wire lambda probe for £24, three bits of "chocolate block" connector and borrow a 22mm spanner. Change it yourself, easy as pie

Forgot to mention, its only failed on tick-over!! After about 1200rpm the emissions are fine all the way through the rev range.

Thanks for the replys.

i'd say you might as well as you've bought it.
Look at the turbo, follow exhaust just past heat shield and there she blows!
