tapping noise from top of engine
Guys/Girls,
Tonight my my99 classic (standard uk turbo model 82k) has developed a tapping from the top of the engine....
it goes away under throttle and is definetly most audable under idle....
I checks the oil and theres non/very little...
It drives fine (for now)
I have rushed to the garage and put some magnetec in it but the noise remains....
its next service is due in 60 miles...... typical......
any folks out there that can suggest whats gone wrong....
and possible expected bills????
pants....

I have just bought a MY99 classic which does the same thing.
When cold it has a `top end tapping` which lessens when warmer, and goes completely above idle.
The car was checked out by my localish Scooby specialist, who reckoned it was the cam belt tensioner, and as long as the noise was not there all the time, to leave it until the next cam belt service to get it looked at.
What swayed his mind was the fact that sometimes on start up, the noise is not there...........althought 90% of start ups it does it.
Hope this helps
