Default k+n panel filter changes over models?

purchase a k+n panel filter from a guy off here a couple of weeks back, now i thoght the impreza air box was pretty much the same desgn over the years, but not so sure now... trying to fit the filter it seems smaller than the original panel filter i have,to clarify the box lower section that sits into the lower part of the air box is a fair bit smaller in size, but the rubber top section is the same??? the filter just does not seem to sit inside the lower section correctly.... are there different k+n applications for the impreza over the years? mines a my00 but i have no part number on this filter to compare fitment.... seller never mentioned anything when i collected it so assumed there was no problem......

AFAIK it should come with 2 adhesive foam inserts to stick in your airbox to seat the filter right.

just received a mail off the guy i purchased the filter off..... says he didnt have any problems fitting the k+n to his airbox, and didnt need to use any other bits of foam to acheive a perfect fit, thinks the difference might lie in the fact my car is an import?? are uk models and jap spec air boxes different in some way? thats thrown me because ive never read anywhere that they are
