rear brake pads on '97 turbo

rear brake pads on '97 turbo
hi ppl
have just changed my front brake pads to some nice new red stuff ones from EBC, thought while i was at it would check the rear ones.
heres my question, what sorta gap should there be between the rear pads and the disc? cos myn look awfully 'snug'.
and also could this be the reason why there is a grating kinda noise when am driving along?
