Default Non Starter!!

Hi all!!
I posted this tread in security as i thhought it was an alarm problem, but sigma sam has put me right (thanks again) so thought i would try here to see if anybody can help me.
I am having some problems starting the car, sometimes when i try it just turns over and doesnt fire, and then i can sit there for ages trying to get it to start but nothing! then i can leave it over night go back and it will fire straight away? It only happens roughly 1-2 times a week but its driving me mad I spoke to someone today who said it might be the fuel pump but i can hear it ok when the ignition is on,sigma sam suggested the MAF sensor but is there any way of checking it?

Hope someone can help
Thanks
Nicos

Hi m8, to check the maf get the engine hot and disconnect it if it stalls it's working ok also you may want to consider checking your plug gaps (0.7MM) and the condition of the coils

you don't mention what car you have

Dont think the maf would stop the engine starting you would notice the bad running prior. If the car runs with no problems and no engine check lights etc i would be inclined to start with the imobiliser.

sounds like fuel pump relay, mines was same not starting after a run then if left went no probs. when you turn ignition on the pump gets a 12v jag of power then relay drops it to around 5v. it was the 5v that was missing in mine so wouldnt start. my93 wrx.
turn ignition on then after a few seconds then see if pump is running. i loosend a fuel line and ran into bottle with someone on keys.

could be cam/crank sensor. I know cam sensor can give a similar problem, although that often occurs when the engine is hot

Id be inclined to say that it could be the fuel pump relay too, had the same problem when i had my vtech prelude, go to an auto electrician and check the wiring lad, mine was messed up with the alarm when it was put in,
Hope ya get it sorted!

Thanks for all the ideas guys! will have a look at it on the weekend, And its a 96 uk turbo, I thought it was the immobiliser but have been told that the sigma m30 alarm only has two immobiliser points, one on the fuel pump and one on the ignition and as it turns over and the fuel pump does turn on when disarmed it cant be them!
Thanks again and i will keep you posted!
