I've cleaned mine each time it's off the car. I use thinners / kerosine whichever comes to hand first and a cotton bud.

Gently wipe the metal surfaces and wire in the centre. There's always black stuff that needs wiping off.

Mines a 97UK Turbo, the one thats housed in a chunky plastic body. I don't have any symptoms of a bad MAF, just thought best to keep things clean.

Read about cleaning them on here - no harm done yet and maybe helping in the long run - I'll probably never know, does anyone else ?

its off an 03, only reason i wanted too was because im having a new engine and wanted everything to be as clean as possible for that "as new" type feeling.....got no real reason to suspect that its knackered, other than the fact its been sat in the boot for a couple of months.....

Definately leave it alone otherwise you will probably ruin it, the GDB/GDA sensors very rarely cause an issue.

ok, for me now it's issue! i drive 98 turbo wagon, whos got poor power on lower rpms. when i floor it, engine rews and everything is fine. spurk plugs brand new, stock filter for now. cleaned maf - got little better but in a few days bad again. i've got that ugly MAF , in tube. 400 euro in latvia

can i "build" a new maf and use a newer generation sensor? (only sensor, with no tube body)? is there any differences in voltage, info, data to ecu?

thanks!

p.s. i've got this MAF

You canb clean a hot wire maf which is what you have, use brake cleaner and a cotton bud with a "delicate touch". However be careful, are you sure this is the problem ? You can't swap to the later one as the callibrtation is incorrect. (unless you are using aftermarket management)
