Engine Warning Lamp
Hi People,
Driving home tonight, I came off a roundabout with plenty of revs and the engine light proceeded to illuminate itself (continuously).
I immediately backed off and nursed the car a third of a mile home, where I switched off the engine (let it chill) and restarted it, but the light is still there!
Isn’t misfiring or anything on tick over and seems as normal
It’s a 2001 bugeye WRX with 55,00 miles on the clock and service history.
Anybody had similar?
I’m taking it to the dealership tomorrow, but anybody give me some prior warning on how much the little trip may cost me?
Any help would be most appreciated.
Cheers,
Charlie

Could really be any number of faults. The check engine light (CEL) comes on for all sorts of reasons, mainly due to the car having so damn many sensors!!
It could be minor, but on the other hadn, could also be major. The advice in the manual is to have it checked asap.
For what it's worth I called Subaru Assistance and was informed that if the light came on with no other symptoms, then turned off again, that it should be fine. They were apparantly informed of this by Subaru.
I have had it light up 3 times in the last 6 weeks on MY03....
1st time - 2 Tumble Motors needed replaced - Light was on for a while, then off
2nd time - Oxygen Sensor needs replaced - Light was on for a while, then off
3rd time - Wastegate Solenoid needs replaced - Light stayed on until turned off by dealer
So you see, it could be anything. Take it and have it checked.
I am looking into getting a scanner to check it myself, due to so many damn trips to the dealer!! At least then I will know if the trip is urgent or not.

Cheers mate that's a great help!
Phoned the dealer and they said it was probably due to one of the MANY sensors too
They said it should be OK to leave until the next time it goes off.
Then they'd plug it in and find the fault. But at £30 (plus VAT) a go, let's hope it doesn't happen on a regular basis
Cheers,
Charlie

Connect the test connectors under the dashboard (the two loose black ones near the steering column) and see which sensor produced the fault. See how to do it here http://www.saxonfields.freeserve.co....htm#_ECU_Reset. Then if it is a sensor just replace it and do a reset to clear the memory.

Oh and thats also why I am looking into a scanner of some sort. My car is out of warranty come Jan and I don't fancy those prices.
You can pick up a cable for roughly £60 and the software is free. I just need to locate a cheap laptop, then I will go for it.
