Not sure how to answer this one:

Your U8 ecu will have been fitted with an sti chip in japan (i think). This will run very aggressive fuel and ignition map, a bit too much for standard uk fuel and would need at least optimax to run with the risk of detonation/engine failure.

The z4 ecu (i have one) runs perfectly fine on optimax alone and i think it will run OK and will be safer than the U8 plus chip you had.

I stand to be corrected.

there is no chip in there but there is a spare socket,

so that means its running a standard map!
,car has improved with a induction + full decat

it is running its standard map which is way better than the map you have at present, to be best suited to the decat and induction kit you are better putting in a scoobyecu chip which will run on super unleaded or a VOS chip which will map for normal 95 ron unleaded.

U8 ECU is standard 1993/1994 WRX
Z4 ECU is 1994-1996 WRX
STi ECU was SA or SB
RA ECU are W9 or Z5

The Z4 is the best/safest stock map you can probably get for a Pre96 car running on UK fuel.

a z4 in a wrx will give 260 ,a sti 2 with the right ecu will give 275 ,so a a sti with a z4 will be safer and run better on uk fuel but will it still give 275 or not? as its not got as high a boost setting as a 6k

doesthis make sense
thanks matt

U8 or W6 ECU is standard 1993/1994 WRX
2C is standard 1994 WRX (a bit of a cross-over between U8/W6 and the Z4)
Z4 ECU is 1994-1996 WRX
STi ECU was SA
STi RA ECU was SB
STi 2 ECU was 6K
STi 2 RA ECU was 7K
WRX RA ECU are W9 or Z5
WRX Wagon 1C, 3B, V9
UK/Euro GT/Aus WRX Saloon & Wagon V7, 7D, 6D

Z4 is 12.7psi, 6K from an STi 2 runs 13.17psi and peaks at 13.64psi @ 5800rpm.
Not alot in it TBH.

However, the STi runs a little leaner and on average 2-3 degree's more advance (where it matters).

Therefore the Z4 will not give the same power, even if fitted in the STi but as mentioned above would be safer on UK fuel

so you loose a little bit of power for a safer running car which is not a bad thing, however if i buy a chip it wont matter what ecu i put it in (u8 or z4) as it uses its own map

can you tell me what does this mean
