Default Braking in the snow

In grimsby its snowing like mad at the moment.

Just driving to work and I skidded and I believe the ABS came on, never had skidded the car before. The brakes sounded and felt quite violent and I felt it through my footbrake. Is this normal?

Regards
Andy

Yes..

I have wired the ABS fuse to a switch so I can turn it off in snow.. prefer no ABS in the snow.. the snow builds up in front of the tyres and allows you to slide to a stop..
