Default Squeeky steering MY00 UK turbo

Recently bought a UK turbo, loving it but have now started to hear a loud sqeeking noise when steering at low speed. It does sound like a mouse has gotten into the steering column !

I cannot see any signs of rubbing etc and also cannot find anyone else mentioning this on the forum, most people seem to get a loud whirring noise.

Anyone have any ideas?

Track rod ends are old and dry?

At high speed you wont hear it as you'll be holding the wheel more or less straight.
To check, take the wheel off and hold onto the TRE whilst someone gently turns the wheel and you should be able to feel it.
Noise travels and it may sound like its coming from somewhere else see.

Possibly if it was worn out.
Not if it is just dry.

Just taken my MY00 to a dealer to diagnose this problem. The steering has been creaking at low speed for the last couple of months. They said that it sounded like it was coming from the rack itself - though if it were the track rod ends I'm sure that the vibration would travel.

I haven't fitted track rod ends for years - will my old splitter work on the Impreza ones? It's got to be worth a try - a new rack would cost a fortune. I don't suppose that the TREs come with grease nipples on them like they did the last time I changed them on my old GT6.
