Default Car kicking out lots of smoke on start up then drives fine without any smoke

As above. I'm quite confused as the car is running very well and was rebuilt about 8000 miles ago.

Lots of oily smoke on start up when cold, after a while it disappears and then drives fine without any smoke I can stop it and start it, no smoke. The smoke seems to appear after being stood for a while.

My suspisions are that its a possible valve stem seal that's gone.

Anyone got any other ideas?

It could be a valve stem seal or, joking aside, are the engine mounts OK? On a flat four like the Scooby, if the engine mounts are shot and the engine isn't settling level, oil can pool in two of the cylinders.

What I'd do is leave the car to sit for a while, then turn the engine over with the coil packs off and then take the spark plugs out, if only one is oily, I'd say it's a valve stem seal. If two on the same side are oily, is the engine level? If all four are oily, how much oils did you put in it?

Cheers

Grim

Did you find out what was wrong?
