Question Whining altenator..

My altenator has begun to whine a little of late and there doesn't seem to be any pattern as to when and under what conditions it occours.
How can I determine if it's the battery or the altenator thats at fault ? I have a voltmeter, what sort of output from the alternator should I be looking for,,, do I need to unplug it..etc ?

Thanks

Are you sure it is the alternator whining? the power steering pump will whine if the fluid is not at the max..

Checked the power steering fluid and it's ok. Had a listen with the bonnet open,, pretty sure the whine is from the altenator.
