picked up my scooby yesterday have noticed that its makin a strange noise,
dont do it all the time, and at different speeds etc and rpm.
its like wind blowing through something, like if u blow over a bottle etc,
is it normal? as the car seems to drive perfect

 

Hi, i'm pretty new to the forums but from what i can gather from SN the whistling/humming noise is one of two things:

(1) a faulty BOV/dump valve. Apparently on certain models its not uncomon for the factory BOV to cause this humming due to the valve not closing properly and air whistling through it. This mainly occurs on pre 97' cars (i think!) and is neither particularly serious, or expensive to fix.

(2) a cracked heat shield. Again, on earlier cars, due to the lack of splash guard covering the underside of the engine it is common for the heatshields (subaru love them!) to be splashed by road water when red hot causing them to fracture, and then vibrate together/resonate. And again, not particularly serious but very anoying.

I only know because my MY97 does both of these things, and am mainly regurgatating info from these wonderfull info packed forums. The 'search forum' function is like having a thousand scooby nuts in your living room and usually comes up with the goods

well mine is a 2001 model, could poss be the same thing, it sounds like wind blowing through something, at any speed it will do it.
anyone else?
