Default How do these mods sound? - Turbo, cooler etc etc

At the end of this month my car is going to be strictly dry use only during the winter months. Hopefully a little cash will be saved for a few mods.

My car is MY00 and has a de-cat, K&N panel, TEK2 software (and a HKS DV which may well be coming off!) I'm thinking of buying the following:-

VF28
Gruppe S headers and up-pipe
STI8 intercooler
TEK upgrade to suit above.

Should I also get things like injectors and fuel pumps, regulator etc?

Don't want to go mad becuase I want to keep the car reasonably safe and hopefully preserve the 'box for as long as possible (I'm a pretty sympathetic driver) However if it breaks it breaks!

Also, I can change things like brakes, suspension parts myself. How hard is it to change a turbo?

fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator would be worthwhile additions.

If you can change suspension then you can change the turbo. Just make sure you get the correct pipe work and fittings, especially going from a TD series to a VF (oil flow requirements are different).

Oh and use lots of WD-40 before trying to undo bolts/nuts around the turbo as they are a pain.

Shouldn't need a fuel reg.
Bob Rawle was happy to map my STI V5 using the standard OEM reg, no problems after 12 months running around 360bhp !
Fuel pump, yes and possibly some 440cc injectors which I just so happen to have 4 of for sale ! PM if interested.
Have you considered fitting a TD05 instead of a VF28 ?

I'm doing pretty much the same now, decided to go for a front mount (Hybrid) instead of a STI8 top mount, price was much cheaper.

With regads to the turbo, Had a little chat with andy f, he's recommended a TD05 as no messing around and supposed to be more reliable.

IIRC don't MY00 cars have 440 injectors anyway?

The reason for wanting to go with the VF28 and bigger TMIC is that I've seen graphs of cars with FMICs and TD05s and they all seem to have loads of lag. Also, although I would like an FMIC I don't really fancy butchering the engine bay and front bumper to make it fit. Would like some more information on why some kits are like £200 and why HKS ones for example are £1000.

I've just fitted a TDO5 to my my00, and i have a WRX intercooler instead of the standard jobbie, it spools up very well, and doesn't seem to be as laggy as i was expecting, and it just seems to pull forever..... running max 1.3 bar, and it loves it!! come to think of it.. so do I!!

The VF28 was going to be my first choice for the same plan as you. I ended up with a VF35. The headers will be laggier than ported std headers, add the TD05 and it could be worse.

I still believe that the STi7/8 TMIC is good for 350+BHP, maybe even towards 400 if modded a little.

Good luck.

I didn't think the lag was excessive when I went from TD04 to TD05+Headers.

I find it nice to drive.

Same from me too.

StiV8 TMIC, Grouppe S and a big 20g TD05.
Slightly laggy from 3000 to 4000, but keep it humming from 4000+ to 7000 and it is ballistic.

Car has 407 bhp or 370 bhp depending on rolling road/time of the year/luck.

Graham.

I'm talking about real world driving in heavy traffic. Lets face it if you live in the south or near any town these days you're going to be stuck in traffic for a large percentage of your trip. ANY lag in these circumstances is going to be a pain IMO. It's easy to say that'll you'll keep it on the 'boil' on a country road etc but it will be tiresome in town, always having to be in a low gear to exploit that gap or space that may appear once in a while.

It's a fact that the headers will make it laggier but I did say that the TD05 could make it worse. I'm not saying that the TD05 is bad. Fit it properly with the right porting, complimentary bits etc and it won't be but how many will just slap it on and hope it works? This goes for most new turbos BTW.

I personally dont need to be driving on boost in town. I dont find it a pain at all....the people behind me may get pi$$ed sometimes

For me I like the on/off. You can clearly distinguish between taking it easy and going fast. With the TD04 it wasn't really like that as the power was always there.
