What do you mean?
Your ign. timing is not manually adjustable - there's no distributor to clock
It's all controlled by the ecu, so neither you nor a garage will be able to change it
The only way to adjust it is either fit a programmable ecu, or an piggyback device to intercept and modify the signal.
Why do you need to adjust the timing?

Not sure your mate is on the right track mate
Try idle control valve perhaps.

Could be wrong, coul dbe something else.

What year of manufacture and model. If it's a MY99/00 the symptoms you describe sound like a dying airflow sensor (MAF), sensor is notoriously flaky on this particular model. But it could be any number of things, idle control valve, lambda sensor, fuel starvation, spark plugs, etc....
As mentioned it isn't ignition timing as that's under control of the engine management and cannot be adjusted with the exception of re-mapping anyway.

hmm food for thought, how do you adjust the idle control valve?i have a 94 uk turbo it all seems pretty good everywhere else just when reversing and stopping abruptly seems to be when it drops,no other time?

Well, if it wasn't running right before hand...
Personally I'd put the standard dump valve back on, check the MAF (unplug when at idle and car SHOULD stall - if it doesn't there may be a MAF problem), reset the ECU.
