Whining Noise on Boost.......
Help......
Sti 5, VF29 turbo, for the first time since getting the car, I actually managed to go out in it (without the familiy) on a 40 mile run along lots of deserted country roads, driving it quite hard, and the following day it now sounds like something expensive is wrong....Car was driven gently for about the last 5 miles, and allowed to tick over for about 2-3 minutes once stopped. Made no noises out of the ordinary.
But the following day the wife went out in it and reported a noise, which I've just checked myself this evening.
Now, thec ar runs as normal, some turbo whistle at low revs, but as soon as it starts to properly come on boost it makes a mechanical whine which increases with increasing revs. Sounds like a supercharger kind of noise.
Had a quick look for leaks, nothing obvious, but it's not the kind of noise I'd expect from a leak.
I suspect the turbo might be dead ? (which is somewhat of a disappointment considering it was fitted new last November so is only ~16000 miles old)
Any help/suggestions appreciated.

You say that the whine increases with revs, does it go away when you lift your foot off the throttle and then reappear when you floor it if so it sounds like your turbo bearings are on their way out.
Or could it be a noise from the gearbox of diff

Not gearbox diff, the noise is all wrong.
I'm thinking turbo bearings (or compressor wheel has been suggested elsewhere).
Bit of a bummer on an 8 month old turbo though.....

Before replacement I would check your oil feed going into the turbo. Specially if you had no smoke coming from the exhaust. Could very well be oil starvation that has caused that. Is there are play in the shaft?
