Question Noisey under acceleration

My car is becoming very noisey under acceleration. It sounds like the tappets but im starting to think it maybe something else as you cant hear anything when I release the pedal, ie when the engine is still at say 3-4000rpm or higher. Ive just changed the oil for some castrol fully synthetic but its still the same. I was wondering if maybe a gasket has gone on the header but not sure what this would sound like on the scoob. The car is an MY99 UK turbo with 53000 miles on the clock. Performance is a little weak too.

Any ideas?

Get it listened to ASAP and in the meantime keep it out of boost! You could be hearing DET ie pinking. There have been instances of the mass airflow sensor failing on that model year with some unwelcome results in some cases!
Let's hope it's not the above but you really should get an Impreza specialist to diagnose.

do you run any kind of non standard induction?

my 00 killed three MAF's in under a year.
I initially had a K+N cone on it, and then swapped to Green Panel filter and it still died.
I had another go gradually.

In the end it didnty matter for me as I went silly and modded the **** off the car
I havent used a MAF since Jan 2004.

Antoehr guy who has just posted seems to be having serious trouble with similar at a more advanced stage.. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=442881
