Red face 'CHECK ENGINE' light - WTF - HELP?!!

98UKTurbo - standard appart from full de-cat Scoobysport.

Brief spell of thrashing (10 mins) 50 - 100mph, 3rd, 4th gears etc followed by slow motorway traffic jam i.e. 1st/ 2nd gear 5 - 15mph etc. The 'Check engine' light then came on. All other dials seems OK - I put the heater on full blast and all was well although the warning light still stayed on. It went off after about 2 - 3 mins, then came on again after about a minute for about minute. All was well after that. The engine always semed fine while this warning illumination was on - no noises, smoke, smell, rattles, knock etc. So why did the warning light illuminate?

Any ideas people?

have you tried plugging the 2 black connectors together under your dash? it gives you a historical read out of what the prb was,
mine did the same a few days ago,

plugged the cables together, turned ignotion on only, the engine flashed twice long and twice short,
this means code 22, which is the knock sensor,
check this link out for more detail:

Cheers ma man. I should have mentioned that I was actually taking the car to the Scooby dealers at the time for its 97,500 mile service. It was slightly over at approximately 99,000 miles and I was wondering if perhaps there was some sort of re-set the dealer might do when servicing i.e. the light came on to remind me that the service was overdue. Am I talking mince?

i dont think your right,
i have 99 turbo 2000, bought it at 80k miles, now done 104k, no service light ever came on, i dont think the service light will come on after 60k, if the engine light come on, then it detected a fault,
under your dash there will be 2 black connectors, connect them together and turn on the ignition.
the egine light will flash and giv you a code,
let me know what its says, ro click follwing link for fault codes.

a long flash will mean the number 10, a short flash will mean 1,
for e.g, if it flashes long twice, and short twice, this will mean code 22, meaning a fault with the knock sensor.

That's f@cking amazing - I never knew about that!!! Unfortunately I was out on the lash last night and my head is up my @ss today however I reckon I read the following: The signals were varying but seemed to be 23, 13 & 22 which equate to MAF, Camshaft position sensor and knock sensor. Any ideas what might be up or what caused this to happen. as noted above, the car has no cat's and the heat shield is missing at the turbo which would probably cause heat soak which could have lead to this???????????

i have exactley the same codes showing at the moment, ill let you know if i fix em,

i think that one of them could be causing a prb with the others, i managed clean. so now its only flashing the knock sensor, i think i might need a new sensor,
i reset my ecu, but it picks it up again about an hour after. im having a play at the mo, so will keep ya posted.
have you noticed your car being lazy at starting up lateley? cause i have had this for last week or so just before these codes came long.

theres a sensor on the top of the eninge, i think its the air idle control, the rubber on mine has broke, so the engine is leaking air,
now this maybe a stupid thing i made up in my head, nut if the engine is leaking air, it would casue the mixture to run rich or weak, hence causeing the maf to pick up a fault, and maybe even causing a little knock on the engine.
though i could be totally incorrect,

see the below link for pics, its a post i got going on another forum:

oh, and you could start by cleaning the sensors?

and please note, that you will have to reset the ecu to see if the faults have gone, when reset, with blk connectors connected the engine light will flash every second to indicate it has been reset and no fault found,
it may take an hour or so, or even longer for the ecu to pick the fault up again if still faulty.

By lazy at starting up, i mean that ive had to trun the key to start and its sometimes taking ages fro the engine to start, (but i might be something totally unrelated)

I ordered a new knock sensor today, will have by wed, so i will lwt you if it solves it, i think me both may have the same prob.

Paul.

Cool as f@ck!!! I re-set my ECU tonight. When I did (when the ignition was on and the engine off) the engine cooling fans were switching on and off and there was a clicking noise as well - strange, but not to worry - I assume this is normal. Thereafter, all is well. Been out for a 15 minute run and all seems well, did the ECU check and guess what - normal!!! Woo hoo!! I will monitor it as there is probably every chance it will come back. My old engine gave up the ghost a year ago and I do not know if the garage re-set the ECU at that time. Therefore there is every chance that the errors could have been from them. Will keep you updated - good luck with your new sensor Dieard!!!
