Remove blitz steel air filter & refit K&N or similar, replace recirc dump valve.

Look for scooby ECU or Unichip, get them custom mapped.

Or splash out properly for an Apexi Power FC and get that mapped.

True Delboy2 but aren't Scoobyclinic doing some thing similar and calling it that .. and Power engineering doing those troublesome 97/98 years too with their "own brand" ecu chips/mods ... no idea what each is doing as I had Scooby ECU and now APexi PFC !

Glad you agreed with my other comments re: steel air filter and VTA dump valve!!

MY97 / 98 ECUs require a different board to the ScoobyECU. There are two suppliers who make boards for these ECUs, neither of them in the UK. Power Engineering and Scooby Clinic use the same boards, and they are much more complex and substantially dearer than the ScoobyECU board.

In a nutshell, the ScoobyECU allows a 1992 - 1996 Impreza Turbo ECU to be remapped by placing the map in an external memory device which a mapper can program to suit the vehicle. The interface between the external memory and the processor is dedicated to that function, but the actual memory device that was originally used for the purpose is no longer made. The ScoobyECU board allows other devices to be used instead of the obsolete part. On the MY97 and 98 the ECU can be remapped in a similar way, but in this case the interface between the processor and the external memory is not dedicated to the external memory. Its "normal" function is to control moderately useful things like the ignition coils. When a memory board is fitted, the normal functions are "lost" unless the board can replicate the functions. This is what makes the board complex and expensive. Not only does it have to hold memory devices, but it has to mimic some of the internal workings of the processor as well.

I would suggest doing something sooner rather than later, because the standard map on your ECU (an 8S unit) is based on having 380cc injectors, and it runs very rich on boost even with them, so it will be overfuelling chronically with 440s in. Ironically, they'll be fine at idle!

Would suggest most cost effective option would be Unichip or GReddy eManage piggy back units. The ignition timing won't be a million miles out anyway, but the fuelling needs sorting and both of the above should be able to sort that out at sensible money.

If you wanna do it properly then look at the MY97/98 board, APEXi PowerFC, PossumLink, Autronic etc. It'll be somewhat dearer but much more flexible.

Cheers,

Pat.
